You can build just about anything on our platform. For example, all new hires build apps as part of their onboarding, and a recent hire on our Customer Success team built their own version of the social media application Goodreads in 4 days. It has user authentication, an activity feed, upvotes, commenting, followers, lists, account management, live updates, a fully loaded database, API connectivity, and more.

About the Platform Team:

Our Platform team executes on our scaling, reliability, and enablement efforts as we look to double our customer base over the next few years. Our scope includes both scalable infrastructure, and our core backend software systems. Success means delivering just-in-time capacity, running workloads quickly, and ensuring petabyte data scalability across numerous applications, while balancing profit margins and addressing issues like infinite loops and inefficient implementations.

About the Role:

You’ll design and ship core components of our direct-to-consumer infrastructure platform, providing technical leadership for the team. You’ll define our tenant isolation and scaling model, design secure, fast, and reliable distributed systems, and architect our technical roadmap. You will also navigate the balance between short-term reliability and long-term improvements, and mentor engineers of diverse backgrounds. Additionally, you'll help foster an inclusive, effective, and collaborative engineering culture. This role includes after-hours/on-call availability.

In This Role, You’ll:

  • Partner directly with executive leadership to define roadmaps, inform and commit to priorities, and execute effectively.
  • Design and implement how the infrastructure can scale to infinitely many apps of any size and complexity.
  • Build the workflow engine and scale the data tier that supports petabyte-scale ingest, export, and workflows for arbitrary direct-to-consumer applications.
  • Build our next-generation cloud which will have multi-region and multi-cloud high availability, and all of the infrastructure and build services that support it.
  • Design and implement observability across core parts of the system, define and implement SLOs, and work on an observability platform that exposes performance characteristics to end users.
  • Support billions of requests across a platform that supports arbitrary end user applications by designing, building, and iterating on core backbone services.
  • Mentor and coach engineers to improve their technical skills and leadership.
  • Participate in our triage and on-call process (along with the rest of the engineering team) to quickly diagnose and resolve issues, and implement the changes that will stop their recurrence.

About You:

  • You are a current staff/principal engineer, tech lead, engineering manager, or highly experienced senior engineer with 7+ years of experience in software development.
  • Deep understanding and hands-on experience with scalable distributed systems, including proficiency in languages and tools such as Rust, Kafka, NodeJS, and Terraform (AWS experience is a plus).
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a track record of designing and implementing solutions that scale to support complex and high-traffic applications.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively partner with executive leadership, define roadmaps, and commit to and execute priorities.
  • Commitment to improving performance and reliability across backend services, including participation in on-call processes to quickly diagnose and resolve issues.

While we do not require new hires to be experts in our tech stack on day 1, familiarity and a willingness to learn fast is helpful. Our tech stack includes:

  • Frontend: Typescript, SolidJS
  • Backend: Typescript, Node.js, Rust, Redis, Postgres, TimescaleDB
  • Infrastructure: AWS - CDK / Terraform / Lambda, Kafka, ECS, Typescript, Elastic

Compensation:

We offer competitive compensation aligned to tier one markets. Our estimated salary for this role ranges from $164,000 to $246,000. Actual pay is determined by multiple factors such as skills, qualifications, experience, and market demand.

Location:

For this role, we are currently only considering candidates who are authorized to work in the US and are within the New York City metro area. We will provide relocation assistance to those who are interested in moving to the NYC area.

We prefer hiring people within commuting distance of our NYC office because we value getting together in person regularly. For those who enjoy working from our Manhattan office on a more regular basis, we offer catered lunches, and happy hours, among other fun perks.
